Faculty

Overview

Faculty have a key role to play in graduate professional development, and CGPD is here to support your work in this area. You can help graduate students find the right pathways for them by engaging with the individual development planning process and by familiarizing yourself with the relevant resources at SGS and beyond.

CGPD is also home to the Healthy Research Teams & Labs Initiative, which celebrates promising practices to foster healthy research team environments at U of T. The initiative includes educational programming, seed funding, and spotlight awards, which provide opportunities for the whole U of T community to get involved.

Graduate Centre for Academic Communication

Graduate students need to be able to communicate sophisticated information to sophisticated audiences. Many graduate students have never submitted a conference abstract, funding proposal, or academic publication, and they need strong communication skills to succeed in their graduate degree. The School of Graduate Studies provides support with written and oral communication skills to complement the training graduate students receive in their academic programs through the Graduate Centre for Academic Communication (GCAC). GCAC provides writing consultations, workshops, and non-credit courses for graduate students. Workshops are also open to University of Toronto postdocs. Learning more about GCAC‘s offerings will help you signpost students, and postdocs, where appropriate, to additional bespoke support with the writing and presentations they are working on as part of their research and academic program requirements.

Centre for Graduate Mentorship & Supervision

The supervisory relationship between faculty and graduate students is at the core of graduate education and researcher development. Supervising graduate students can be incredibly rewarding for faculty supervisors, but it is a shared responsibility between student and supervisor that sometimes requires support. The School of Graduate Studies provides support for faculty and students who seek confidential support with any aspect of their supervisory relationship through the Centre for Graduate Mentorship & Supervision (CGMS). CGMS also provides training in interpersonal skills for both students and faculty supervisors to help support effective, productive supervisory relationships.
